Karnataka legislative assembly refused to spare Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu. This decision may set the state on a collision course with SC. However, the resolutions (both the legislative council and lower house adopted similar resolutions) did not mention Supreme court’s order directing Tamil Nadu to release 6,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water to the neighboring state till September 27.

Legal experts have varying opinions on what can happen – from tying Supreme court’s hands in the matter to outright dismissal of the government and assembly.

It is a more than a century-old dispute and could prove costly for chief minister Siddaramaiah, who gave an impassioned speech in the assembly which is a face-off with the judiciary.
